History of the Ambu Festival

The annual town festival "The Ambu Festival" has been held in Hobro since 1920. It originated from the need for an ambulance - the first festivals managed to raise enough money for this project, hence the name 'Ambulance Days' or "The Ambu Festival".

Today the festival is held in order to give entertainment to the citizens and all guests in Hobro and the surrounding region. Another important purpose is to raise money for a number of social and cultural initiatives. Throughout the years more than 11 mill. Dkk has been donated to such purposes.

The Festival is normally held in the last weekend in August or in the first weekend of September.

Before the Festival

In the weeks before the Festival several events take place: E.g: The finalists in "the Ambu-Girl competition" are nominated, the sale of lottery (tombola) is started and citizens are competing in home-made, non-motorised vehicles - all to the joy and fun of the paticipants and the audience.

The overall programme of the Festival

The festival days includes an open air concert, shows and performances from several exiting artists and bands, dance, tivoli and parades. A few highlights are listed below:

Thursday: open air concert and opening of the tivoli on the festival ground.

Friday: opening of the Festival: night light parade and party in the large tents on the Festival ground

Saturday: Free breakfast and lunch (herrings) included in the entrance, discount prices on several facilities in the tivoli, market and entertainment for children, open air entertainment on the festival scene and parties in the large tents.

Sunday: "Flower and children’s Parade" through the town. Tivoli, entertainment for all ages in the tents and on the Festival scene, Ambu-Girl competition, evening party and closing of the Festival by a large fireworks show.

After the Festival

In the weeks after the Festival the local Ambu-Cabaret is played in the City Theatre.
